This is an update for all Big D IX competitors

If you have not booked your room at state line yet they have sold out Saturday night. The Gold Strike hotel and casino is about 13 minutes away (800-634-1359) and is the closest available for Saturday night but it is a lower level 1 star. About 30 minutes away from Ivanpah is the Silverton Hotel (866-722-4608 - Bass Pro Shop on site) and the Southpoint hotel (866-796-7111). Both of these are much nicer hotels. Book now before they sell out as well. Buffalo Bills (888-386-7867) has rooms for Friday and Sunday nights.

If you plan to practice before Friday at Ivanpah you will need to obtain a permit from the California Bureau of Land Management. Email me and I will send you the contact information at the BLM but you need to do so at least 10 days prior to the event. Roach Dry Lake is no longer a back up day use site and you can not use it for practice days.

We plan to meet Saturday morning at 9:00 am in front of the south west stairs of Whiskey Pete’s hotel near the parking structure. We will head out to the site shortly after. You can reach me on my cell phone at 714-488-1042. You will need to sign the competition waiver at this time. I will be on site Friday if you would like to check in early.

Disc Golf Values has been able to sell Innova CFR discs to provide additional cash payouts for people winning Open, Masters and the Women's divisions throwing Innova discs. The payout for this is listed below. We will have additional cash payouts depending on the number of entries. You do not need to declare a division. You will receive the largest payout that you would qualify for but only one payout per player. If you have questions let me know.

1st place Open Division $500 bonus payout
2nd place Open Division $200 bonus payout
3rd place Open Division $100 bonus payout

1st place Masters Division $250 bonus payout

1st place Womens Division $100 bonus payout

The expenses to host this years event are very different from previous years. I have had to obtain a different level permit that has much higher fees, the insurance policy is expensive and I need to have a port o potty on site that I haven't found a reasonable rate for yet.

Many of the Las Vegas Disc Golf Club guys have stepped up and volunteered to help with marking but depending on how many people enter Big D and how many volunteers show up we may need to have some players rotate in to mark throws. I will not know this until everyone shows up on site Saturday morning.

Weather and scheduling:
If we have issues with rain or water retention for the lake bed, we are not allowed to use Ivanpah at all if it is wet. The back up site of Roach Dry Lake is no longer an option! If it rains we have major issues! The only other option would be to move to El Mirage Dry Lake about 200 miles away. Let's hope this does not need to happen.

If we can’t compete on Saturday the schedule will change to Sunday qualifying and Monday as the finals. If we can’t compete on Sunday as well the finals will be pushed to Monday. If we can’t compete on Monday that will be a lost chance to break the record and that day will not be made up.

The weather in this remote part of the desert can change quickly. You can expect conditions to range from highs in the upper 60’s during the day to highs in the mid 90’s. The wind can be screaming at over 30 mph or it can be dead calm. All of this can take place in one day! Let’s hope for the best but we will have to deal with conditions as they are. Again, there is no back up site beyond El Mirage that we can use if it is raining or if the lake beds are retaining water.

The BLM has provided a new parking area specific for our use. We will drive to the edge of the lake bed and walk out to where we will set up to throw. There is no shade on the lake bed or anywhere close to it and if the wind is blowing we will not set up any EZ Ups for shelter as we have had them go tumbling in the past and have broken a few. Bring sunscreen and some form of folding chair if you can. If you have any walkie talkies please bring them as communication via yelling at 200+ meters does not work. I have two sets to use but I would like more if you can bring them.

Requested supplies (if you can bring any of this that would be great):

Bicycles, EZ Ups, folding chairs, range finders and walkie talkies (I will be using Motorola talkabouts).

We need to practice “leave no trace” camping. This means anything YOU bring out YOU bring back.
